Brazil at the closing

Still about the Olympics closing ceremony, shots from the Brazil prologue, which featured Marisa Monte (as Yemanjá), Seu Jorge, BNegão and Pelé.

The show was designed by Jum Nakao, a Brazilian-Japanese artist in partnership with renowned German LED sculptor Moritz Waldemeyer. The LED costumes were synchronized to the beat of the drums.

Olympic Boys

Definitely the most WTF moment of the ceremony.

Elysium cover

The cover of the new Pet Shop Boys album makes me think of perfume. Are they also releasing a new fragrance?

Speaking of covers, the Boys (fresh from performing at Wimbledon as pre-Olympic match entertainment) are about to release a cover of classic Bee Gees' track "I started a joke" as a B-side to "Winner."

Pet Shop Boys meets Roller Derby

The worst Pet Shop Boys video ever?

Story here.

Rio's Solar Tower

These conceptual renderings are making the rounds again.

The proposed Solar City Tower for the 2016 Rio Olympics looked interesting, but it was impractical. Access to the island is difficult and the amount of energy needed to lift the water up to the top of the tower would be enormous. But the view would've been great!

The Olympic Doobie

The Olympic torch is coming through Toronto tonight and people are actually outside City Hall in the cold waiting for it and drinking cold Cokes. I guess it's appropriate for the Winter Olympics. I passed by and grabbed me this nifty glow-in-the-dark bottle. (Thanks Ash!)

Rio Olympics

Even though the Games are still 7 years away, Rio is partying like it’s 2016. In fact, the announcement created an impromptu holiday in the city, like Cariocas need an excuse to have one. I don’t care much about the games themselves, but I hope the event elevates Rio’s infrastructure and safety. It will be interesting to see how they turn a crime-ridden city often on the brink of civil war into a world-class Olympic destination. They sure had the best promo video -- I like the fact that they used a narrator with a Brazilian accent on it, instead of generic American-English.

And poor Chicago. Not even Oprah and Michelle's power tag-team was enough to charm Olympic officials...

Of course, this is not the first time Chicago loses an Olympic bid. In 1904, occasion of the first US Olympics, Chicago lost the spot to St. Louis. They also lost their bid in 1952 and 1956 (to Helsinki and Melbourne respectively). Maybe 2052?
