Only in Brazil

The controversial Belo Monte dam in the Amazon received another blow this week, when a federal judge halted its construction citing that indigenous people in the region were not properly consulted. The government claims they were, and presented a very "green" plan for building the hydroelectric dam without impacting the area too much. Chinese Lanterns in St. Louis

The Missouri Botanical Garden is hosting a Lantern Festival with 26 Chinese silk lanterns spread among its garden paths. The sights were even more fantastical in the misty gardens after a thunderstorm.

Two dragons, each about 100 ft long, entirely made of Chinese porcelain plates, cups and bowls, were a show-stopper.

There was also a demonstration of sand drawing.

Even Toronto got a little sandy nod.

Brazil at the closing

Still about the Olympics closing ceremony, shots from the Brazil prologue, which featured Marisa Monte (as Yemanjá), Seu Jorge, BNegão and Pelé.

The show was designed by Jum Nakao, a Brazilian-Japanese artist in partnership with renowned German LED sculptor Moritz Waldemeyer. The LED costumes were synchronized to the beat of the drums.

Definitely the most WTF moment of the ceremony.
